Part A covers three girder types.
RDSO has approved the Metal Craft unit at Domjur (Unit 1) under Part A for the fabrication of three kinds of steel girder: open web girders, composite girders and other steel plate girders. The approval belongs to the factory unit itself, which also runs an ISO 9001 quality system.
The RDSO approval is set out in RDSO’s Final Decision Letter No. RDSO/108/1901/00024414, dated 1 September 2022. The letter included Metal Craft Engineering Private Limited in the RDSO vendor directory for one item, 3100425, fabrication of steel bridge girders. Under it the letter lists one sub-item, 3100425002, fabrication of open web, composite and other steel plate girder (Part A), in the category Approved. The manufacturing unit it names is at Domjur, Howrah (Unit 1). The letter records no additional remarks and sets the next quality audit for 30 August 2027. The capacity figure on the letter is listed for this one sub-item; it is separate from the overall capacity of the two units.

The three girder types in the approval.
Open web girders
Truss spans made of chords, verticals and diagonals. In the yard each member is cut from plate and the span is assembled to the railway’s drawings, with stage-wise inspection through fabrication.
Composite girders
A steel girder that works together with a concrete deck cast on top of it at site. The steel girder is what the yard fabricates and the railway inspects.
Other steel plate girders
Girders welded from web and flange plates to the railway’s drawings, for railway spans and for road and foot overbridges.
What the approval means for a girder order.
For a railway, the approval is where a girder order starts: it shows that RDSO has included Unit 1, Domjur, in its vendor directory for the type of girder being bought. The order itself then follows the railway’s own documents. The girders are made to its drawings and specification, the plate is bought to the material grade it names, and the inspection schedule fixes when its inspector sees the work at each stage of fabrication, as the quality assurance plan written for the job sets out. Only after inspection does a girder go for blast cleaning and painting, and then leave the yard for erection.
The railway clients of the division are Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway, Northeast Frontier Railway, South Coast Railway, East Coast Railway, North Central Railway, South Western Railway, East Central Railway and South East Central Railway, together with IRCON.
