How a girder is made

Open web girders

Through-truss and other open web spans, built up from top and bottom chords, verticals and diagonals. Members are cut from plate on the CNC plasma cutting machine and assembled in the yard to the customer’s drawings. The photographs on this page show them in bare steel in the yard, and in service on piers.

Composite girders

A concrete deck that acts together with the steel section beneath it. The steel part is fabricated here to the drawing and the railway’s inspection schedule, then sent to site, where the deck is cast on top.

Plate girders

Welded up from flange and web plates, for railway spans, road overbridges and foot overbridges. Every girder is checked at each stage against the quality assurance plan written for its order, then blast cleaned and painted.
